New member of Mediafrica’s research team: Nanna Schneidermann

We’d like to welcome our new member of the Mediafrica’s research team, Nanna Schneidermann, from Aarhus, Denmark.

Nanna holds a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Aarhus (2014). The title of her thesis is Connectionwork - Making a Name in Uganda's Music Industry. As the title indicates, it deals with the growing music economy in Uganda, following young musicians as they strive for fame in Kampala.  It focuses on the particular dynamics of value creation that Nanna terms connectionwork, experimental and often tension-ridden practices of self-fashioning in the emergent creative economy. Having followed closely the ways in which new media technologies have revolutionized how popular culture is produced and enjoyed in urban spaces in Africa, she has turned her interest to wider questions about the relationship between new media and social change.

In the Mediafrica project her position is as a Post Doctoral fellow. Her work place will be at the Oslo and Akershus University College for Applied Sciences (HiOA), at the Development Studies section. The engagement will start on March 1st 2016 and will last for two years. During these two years she will study new media in South Africa. Her focus will be on new media and health practices. The fieldwork will be conducted in the Cape Town area and during this time she will be affiliated to the University of Cape Town.

We are very glad to have Nanna on board. She is a valuable contribution to the project and her work will constitute a cornerstone in project.
